Top 3 Problems You'd Solve
In the spirit of The Liberal Avenger's post "Top 3 Dems for Pres", I'd like to know the top three problems that you believe the U.S. is facing that could be addressed directly with reasonable legislation.†
Here's my list of problems in order of descending importance:
- Wealth accumulation & class inequality.
- Our struggling public educational system.
- Out-of-control defense spending.
Before you call me a Commie, read this essay by Thom Hartmann. The estate tax and, more importantly, a much higher marginal income tax rate will be necessary in the coming years to maintain a standard of living for the poor that is considered standard for such a wealthy nation.
Kerry pussyfooted around this issue. He should have declared a new battle of the Class War against the billionaires of this country. Unfortunately, Kerry was...kinda...one of them. Ironically, though, him and Soros would have been happily able to wrap themselves in the appeasement flag over this one. I recommend any and everything by Chuck Kelly on this and any issue; I think Kelly has been ignored far too long, and much to the chagrin of Progressives everywhere.
Our public school system can work. I like to think of myself as a prime example. Nobel Laureate Rick Smalley has commented extensively on the need to bring our schools up to speed with the rest of the world in the areas of science and engineering. Save for the Rapture occuring in my lifetime, this is a necessary move. We need to pump tons 'o money into it; pay teachers extravagant sallaries; give them more money than they can spend. (...well, not really. Oversight is always a priority #2 for any social program.)
I'd start by gutting the intractable Missile Defense boondoggle.
†An example of unreasonable legislation would be the internment of Arab-Americans to curb terrorism.
