Stirling Newberry on the Coming Failed State of Iraq

The Blogging of the President: 2004

It sounds as if Stirling has concluded that long-term Bush Administration strategy is to cut and run. I keep vacillating on this issue... In my opinion, either Iraq is so comprehensively a disaster that the Bush Administration is going to dump it in the laps of the Iraqis and run - or the neocons are so focused on their goals (super sphere of influence in Iraq including permanent bases in Iraq, some measure of control over oil, friendly government in Iraq, intelligence assets, massive US corporate opportunities for reconstruction...) that they will continue to push forward regardless of the costs in personnel, equipment and American tax-dollars.

We've embarked upon this great misadventure at the behest of the neocons towards a set of goals that has never been crystal clear. They are unrepentent. According to official neocon rhetoric everything has gone according to plan.

I've asked this question before but it is worth asking again now that several months have passed:

What exactly are the neocons and by extension the Bush Administration really after in Iraq? Whatever it is, we know they haven't achieved it yet... Are they still intent on realizing their goals or have the abject failures finally hit home, driving them to flee?

What do you think?
