Jesus Has a Posse

It feels as if religious extremism and attempts by the extremists to wield political power in our country is at an all-time high (or at least a Post-War high). We have a president who's "personal hero" is Christ. The leadership of the US Senate has just launched an attack on the Democrats based on their imagined lack of faith. Some of the most obnoxious people ever to appear in the public eye (Tom DeLay and Jerry Falwell, for example) seem to be able to get away with anything amongst their constituencies as long as they maintain the illusion of being on Team Jesus.

For a non-religious, non-conservative this apparent trend is very troubling. We are moving towards a society under the thumb of thought-police at best and an outright theocracy at worst.

Or are we?

My question to you is whether or not these are indeed unique times as far as religious conservatism in American society is concerned or are things really just the same as they have always been, with perhaps a media fetish over extremism amplifying the noise of the holy rollers to a degree where the Jesus freaks' influence appears all pervasive.

Is Jesus' posse in charge or do they just think they are?
