Israel Hedges its Superpower Bets

Boston.com / News / World / Asia / China bolsters its forces, US says

This article about China building up its military to where the US would be unable to prevent China from taking Taiwan by force also suggests that Israel has been sharing cutting-edge military aviation technology secrets with China - technology and secrets that may allow China to produce fighter aircraft sophisticated enough to rival those produced and used by the United States.

That the United States has helped keep Israel alive for the past 60 years is due to the mechanics of the Cold War. Israel was our foothold for democracy in a strategically important and volatile region.

Now that the Cold War is long behind us, what exactly is it that we are getting strategically from our relationship with Israel? What is Israel getting from us that they couldn't get from the Peoples' Republic of China?
