The Collapse of the Soviet System
The Collapse of the Soviet System
A person who writes a lot in the blogosphere who everybody knows that I respect a great deal (yes, his name is Stirling Newberry) posted a link to a Slate article about why the Pope isn't the person responsible for the collapse of Communism. The Slate article is excellent and worth reading, but Stirling's comments about the article are even more fascinating, I think.
One item, among many, stood out for me:
...but it seems odd that the people who assert the obvious superiority of laissez-faire capitalism over even the most moderate forms of government involvement in an economy...I'm glad that Stirling said this. Somebody needed to say it.
Here we have a dyed-in-the-wool liberal economist-philosopher endorsing capitalism due to it's "obvious superiority" of centralized government economies. It's time to lay the tattered strawman to rest that says that Liberals = Communists. (You hear that John Jay Ray, you deranged fool?)
I hate to burst everybody's Stalinist bubble but Stirling is right. There will be no liberal blogger cheering section at the May Day parade in Red Square this year. It's time to throw out those red armbands and get back to work in the salt mines where we'll earn an honest day's pay for an honest day's work, just like Jesus, Lech Walesa, Ronald Reagan and the Pope told us to do.
