Drooling on the Vietnam Vets Jack Shafer

I've long suspected that the old saw about Vietnam Vets being "spit on" by long-haired, herb-smoking anti-war hippies was an urban legend. There is no question that there were elements within the anti-war left during Vietnam that were improperly sympathetic to those who served in Vietnam. The legacy of America's failure to recognize the Vietnam sacrifice plays itself out every day in the trappings of jingoistic overcompensation in our hysterical "war on terror" and its associated flag-draped inanities.

Slate wrote about a book that debunked the Viet-spit-myth in 2000. If you've ever wrung your hands in grief over the the perceived misdeeds of our ideological forefathers in the anti-war movement of the Vietnam-era then read the article and absolve yourself now.
